Faint Folly - An Illusion of Peace by Bente Illevold

Performed live at Brasswind festival, Åsane kulturhus 27.09.2025 by Bente Illevold and Swedish Ssxophone Quartet Rollin’ Phones. Composers Note: “Faint Folly” is not a common expression in English, but it can be understood as a faint or subtle form of foolishness or lack of judgment. In this piece, the term is used to describe the light and pleasant state of being and attitude that one is tempted to adopt in a peaceful country like Norway — especially on warm summer days, when the world feels calm and safe. In such moments, it feels natural to enjoy life. The streets are deserted, the cities quiet; life is lived in cabins, on boats, or in exotic holiday destinations far away. Yet, while we enjoy life — with sun, seafood, and good wine — we know deep down that between 30 and 50 people die every day in Ukraine. The wars rage on, only a few hours away by plane. Faint Folly mirrors this duality. It opens with a light, transparent texture and builds around a simple, almost naïve melody, clearly inspired by pop music. It is beautiful and familiar — and precisely for that reason, also a reminder of how easy it is to live inside one’s own bubble. But beneath this seemingly innocent surface lies something else: a sense of unrest, a feeling that this is not the whole truth. This is not real. Faint Folly – The Illusion of Peace is written for reflection. The music does not seek to blame, but rather to serve as a contemplation of how easy it is not to care — and how willing we are to maintain the illusion of peace, as long as it serves ourselves.

Peace Talks - John Mindeman

Peace Talks by John Mindeman Performed live at Brasswind, Åsane kulturhus 27.09.25 by Bente Illevold and Swedish Saxophone Quartet Rollin’ Phones. Composer’s note: “It isn’t enough to talk about peace. One must believe in it. And it isn’t enough to believe in it. One must work at it.” -Eleanor Roosevelt Many know that to establish real peace, lasting peace, requires the belief and commitment of all parties. The peace process requires trust, patience, listening, allowing space for the other, sacrifice, and working together for the common goal. Dialogue builds understanding. Understanding builds empathy. Empathy with humility builds peace. Fine musicians exemplify these traits every time they rehearse and perform. Music requires that they work together — cooperating, communicating, understanding one another, making space for all involved, and above all listening intently so that the piece of music becomes a living work of art. Working together with such intention can create a finished product of beauty and deep meaning. In my composition, Peace Talks, the euphonium and the four saxophones are having an intense dialogue with one another — listening, commenting, agreeing, disagreeing, and sometimes repeating one another. The instruments work together to weave rhythms, melodies, and harmonies, constructing the fabric of the piece. The first movement, “Proclamation and Negotiations,” highlights the euphonium in the “lead” role, with the saxophones supporting, repeating, reflecting, and even softening the statements of the euphonium. The second movement, “Celebration,” is a joyous melodic free-for-all wherein all the instruments act in partnership, all voices are heard, and all have equal roles to play. It was my honor to write Peace Talks in 2023 for the Norwegian euphonium artist Bente Illevold, and the Swedish saxophone quartet, Rollin’ Phones. - John Mindeman
